Zum Grazer Uhrturm Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Zum Grazer Uhrturm, you immediately get that cozy Austrian vibe — it’s housed in a traditional building right on Sporgasse, one of Graz’s most charming cobblestone streets. The lobby isn’t huge or flashy, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the place that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto a local secret. You know what really struck me? The staff actually seems to know the neighborhood inside and out, which becomes incredibly helpful when you’re trying to figure out where to grab dinner or which route to take up to the famous clock tower.

Location That Actually Matters

Honestly, the location is what makes this three-star hotel punch above its weight. You’re literally in the heart of Graz’s old town — I mean, you can walk to Hauptplatz in about three minutes, and the Uhrturm (the clock tower the hotel’s named after) is just a short climb up Schlossberg hill. The narrow streets around here are packed with little cafes, wine bars, and shops that tourists often miss because they’re staying further out. What couples especially love — and I can see why — is that you can easily explore everything on foot, then retreat back to this quiet street when the crowds get too much.

The Rooms

The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed, with that classic Austrian attention to detail you don’t always find in budget-friendly places. The windows looked out onto the historic street below, and while it can get a bit noisy during the day (it’s a pedestrian zone, so mostly just footsteps and conversations), it quiets down nicely in the evenings. The beds are comfortable enough, and the bathroom — while not spacious — has everything you need including a decent shower with good water pressure.

Breakfast and Daily Rhythms

Breakfast is served in a small dining area that feels more like someone’s home than a hotel restaurant. It’s a solid continental spread — fresh bread, local cheeses, cold cuts, and coffee that’s actually good (not always a given in smaller hotels). I appreciated that they source some items locally, and the staff is happy to point you toward the best bakery nearby if you want to try something different. The whole morning routine feels relaxed, which sets a nice tone for exploring the city.

Why Guests Keep Coming Back

What really works here is the combination of authentic local character and practical comfort — you’re not paying for amenities you won’t use, but you’re getting genuine hospitality and an unbeatable location. The hotel attracts people who want to experience Graz like locals rather than tourists, and that creates a nice atmosphere throughout the property. For couples especially, there’s something romantic about staying in the old town and being able to wander these medieval streets whenever the mood strikes.

Best hotels in Graz blend rooftop saunas, Styrian wine bars, and views of red-tiled rooftops.

  • Giulia from Italy (8/10)

I loved the location and the host's availability too (I had a problem with the shower during a public holiday and I got it fixed on the same day).

  • Csaba from Hungary (7/10)

Accommodation in a central location, on a pedestrian street, nevertheless you could relax.

  • Gábor from Hungary (6/10)

Best possible location in Graz old town in Sporgasse where you can find traditional cafes and fresh bakeries, shops of all kind. Easy access to/from railway stations, close to main attractions in a calm street. The apartment was clean and spacious.

  • Moira from United Kingdom (8/10)

Central location. Very comfortable bed. Clean bedding.

  • Anders from Sweden (7/10)

The best with this apartment is it central position in the heart of old town. Every hotel or similar seem to be on the expensive side in Graz and this has a good location regardless if traveling for business or vacation. It has a kitchen, washmaskin, dishwasher so it is good also for a longer stay. A bit difficult to find but you will find it just close to a small Indian restaurant.
