Schlossberghotel Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Schlossberghotel along the Kaiser-Franz-Josef Kai, you immediately get that “this is going to be good” feeling. The building sits right on Graz’s historic waterfront, and honestly, the location alone makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something special. It’s one of those places where you can tell the owners actually care — there’s a polish to everything without feeling stuffy. The entrance has this understated elegance that whispers rather than shouts, which I actually prefer in a five-star property.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s brilliant about this spot? You’re literally in the heart of everything, but it doesn’t feel chaotic. The Schlossberg (that’s the castle hill) is right there — I mean, you can practically touch it from some windows. The old town spreads out around you with all those UNESCO World Heritage sites just a few minutes’ walk away. Couples absolutely love it here, and I can see why — there’s something romantic about strolling along the Mur River at sunset, then coming back to your hotel without any fuss. The fact that they have private parking is actually a huge deal in this part of town, trust me on that one.
The Room Experience
The rooms here strike that perfect balance between classic Austrian charm and modern comfort. You’ll find thoughtful touches everywhere — good lighting for actually reading, proper blackout curtains, and bathrooms that make sense. What impressed me most was the attention to detail in the furnishings; everything feels intentional rather than just thrown together. The views vary depending on which room you get, but honestly, even the courtyard-facing ones have their charm. The soundproofing is excellent too, which matters when you’re in the city center.
Breakfast & Dining
The breakfast setup here is genuinely impressive — they’ve got continental options, but also proper vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices that don’t feel like afterthoughts. It’s buffet-style, but the quality is more like what you’d expect from à la carte service. I particularly appreciated that they source locally when possible, and you can taste the difference in the bread and pastries. The dining area has these lovely views over the river, making morning coffee feel like a proper event rather than just fuel for the day.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
There’s something telling about the fact that this place has more repeat guests than most other properties — people don’t usually return to hotels unless they’re doing something right. I think it’s the combination of that unbeatable location with genuine hospitality that doesn’t feel forced. The staff seem to actually remember guests, which creates this nice sense of familiarity. For couples especially, it hits all the right notes: romantic setting, excellent service, and that perfect base for exploring Graz without feeling like tourists trapped in a tourist bubble.
The concierge service in Graz arranges private Schlossberg picnics, Styrian wine cellar tastings, and behind-the-scenes opera tours.

Great hotel in a very nice location. Walkable distance to all the attractions.
Quite spacious suites with all required amenities, also very warm rooms.
The staff was friendly and polite, very helpful at all times. We ended up in the hotel on Christmas Eve, and thankfully the restaurant was working, while the whole city was closed.
The breakfast was very tasty and fresh, one of the best cake selections I've seen in hotels.Heyrhea from Hungary (10/10)
The breakfast is excellent, and the service is great. It’s very convenient for staying with a dog, and the hotel is right by the river, making it perfect for walks. It’s also close to the city centre.
