Hotel Restaurant – Häuserl im Wald Graz Overview
First Impressions
When I first pulled up to Hotel Restaurant – Häuserl im Wald Graz, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name alone — but the setting immediately won me over. Tucked away in the Mariatrost district, this three-star property sits along a quiet residential street that feels worlds away from the city center, even though you’re still technically in Graz. The building has that classic Austrian charm without being overly quaint, and there’s something genuinely welcoming about the whole setup. What struck me right away was how many guests seemed to know the staff by name — turns out this place has an unusually high number of repeat visitors, which says something.
Location & Getting Around
The Roseggerweg address puts you in Mariatrost, which is honestly one of those neighborhoods that locals love but tourists often miss. You’re about a 15-minute drive from Graz’s historic center, but the real draw here is the immediate surroundings — rolling hills, walking trails, and that distinctly Austrian countryside feel. I noticed couples particularly seem drawn to this area, and I get why. There’s something romantic about being nestled in the woods while still having easy access to the city. The free private parking is actually a bigger deal than you might think, especially if you’re planning to explore the Styrian countryside by car.
The Restaurant Experience
The restaurant component isn’t just an afterthought here — it’s clearly a focal point of the operation. During my stay, I watched both hotel guests and locals from the area come in for dinner, which is always a good sign. The menu leans into regional Austrian cuisine without being too heavy-handed about it, and the portions are generous without being overwhelming. What I appreciated was the relaxed atmosphere; you can easily spend a couple hours over dinner without feeling rushed. The staff genuinely seems to care about the food they’re serving, not just going through the motions.
Breakfast & Amenities
Breakfast here surprised me in the best way — they’ve managed to create a buffet setup that actually caters to different dietary needs without making it feel like an afterthought. The continental options are solid, but they also have proper vegetarian and vegan choices that go beyond just fruit and toast. I mean, how often do you find a smaller Austrian hotel that really gets the vegan thing right? The room itself was comfortable and clean, nothing fancy but everything you need for a good night’s sleep. The whole property has this lived-in quality that feels authentic rather than sterile.
Why Guests Keep Coming Back
After spending time here, I understand why so many people return to this place year after year. It’s not trying to be something it’s not — just a well-run, comfortable spot where you can actually relax. The combination of being close to nature while still having city access works really well, especially for couples looking for a peaceful base. The fact that recent guests consistently rate the location so highly tells you something about how this place delivers on its promise of being a retreat that doesn’t sacrifice convenience.

Reviews of Hotel Restaurant – Häuserl im Wald Graz

Cosy room with a bathroom in the attic of a separate small house, we were placed outside of the main hotel but only 1min of walk away. The area is calm, green and relaxing. Our room was flawless, big bed with a firm but not too tough matress, enough storage space for clothes and things, small good quality ventilator (handy as the day was hot and humid). No noise from the other occupants, also the neighbourhood is very quiet – we had an amazing rest. Tasty buffet breakfast.

We were here for the third time. It is a little bit lottery what room you get. This time it was in the main building. The location is very nice and personel is helpful. If you are lucky you can get spacey room in the garden.
Danijel from Croatia (8/10)
Very quiet location in Graz, a little bit away from the city centre, but well connected with tram, the station is some 10 minutes walking distance. Free parking. Great restaurant with Austrian cuisine. Our room was in the separated object Sonne, 5 minutes walking distance from the main object with reception and restaurant. The hotel is equipped in vintage style, it feels like you're at someone's home. There is a minibar in the room with cold drinks.

Our family room was in Haus Sonne, a cute chalet type house in the large gardens. Setting is special: rock gardens with lots of little paths to wander. Parking is plentiful. Lovely breakfast on the large terrace overlooking the valley.
